Automatic seeds are the latest addition to the Cannabis Seeds family with them coming to the major market in around 2008.

Automatic Seeds will tend to flower after a shorter period of time than Regular or Feminised seeds and as the name suggests they flower automatically after a certain point regardless of the amount of light to the plant.

When first introduced it was thought that Automatic Weed Seeds were for begginer growers and just for those who had smaller spaces or less time available however with the evolution in the Automatic Seed game they are now suitable for all markets of seed buyers.

Nearly all Automatic Cannabis Seeds will be Feminised for you to make life as easy as possible but there are a few Regular Automatic strains knocking about.

The Ups:

The overall speed of the crop – Most (not all) Automatic strains will have a faster overall crop time. As the plants switch to flowering you don’t have to rely on the amount of light so you will see a quicker turnaround.

Size and Storage – A big difference you find between Automatic & Feminised seeds is the size of the plant. Automatic strains tend to be smaller meaning you can fit it in a tighter and more discrete space.

Making life easier – Automatic Seeds will start the flowering process when ready regardless of the amount of light they have. With Feminised or Regular seeds you need to adjust the light schedule to make the flowering process start.

Downs:

Yield – Although this seems to be getting less of a norm, Automatic Weed Seeds tend to yield less.

Genetics – With more strains coming in Automatic as the newest member of the family Automatic seeds can be sometimes let down by the genetics available. They have not been around as long as Feminised and Regular seeds so they may not be as stable or proven to work.

Feminised seeds have come a long way since being first introduced in the late 90s.

When first introduced the Feminised Weed Seeds had problems when it came to stability & quality. The main issue being the Feminised Seeds becoming hermaphrodites.

As more research & development has been done, Feminised Seeds have completely changed with some breeders now only offering Feminised Seeds.

Thanks to the stability of the process & great genetics Feminised seeds are now more reliable than ever.

A lot of people now even prefer to use Feminised seeds over finding a Female in a pack of Regulars.

Ups:

Time & Money – Cost effective as they are guaranteed to be Feminised. You don’t need to buy multiple packs of Regulars and search through to find the Female seeds.

Big Market – As the market for Feminised seeds is now so big the range of genetics available is astonishing.

Cons:

Breeding new strains – Although there are now processes in place to breed Feminised plants unless you want to get certain chemicals (perfectly safe/toxic free options are available) there is no way to naturally cross breed feminised seeds.

99% – Feminised seeds can only guarantee a 99% chance of being Female. Although this is pretty good its still not quite 100%!

The Cannabis plant in its natural state is Dioecious (plants produce a male plant and a female plant but not usually in a single plant) enabling the plants to breed and create new specimens when mixing in their natural environment.

The grower will have no control over the sex of the Regular seeds. They must be grown and will only find out once they start doing so.

Feminised seeds are more popular now with better and more genetics available. Regular Cannabis Seeds however are going the other way.

Most people who are now after regular seeds tend to be old school growers.

Growers who like grow the plant as naturally as possible also go for Regular Seeds.

Anyone who is looking to make their own new strains will also go for Regular Seeds over Automatic or Feminised.

Pros:

Making new strains – If you want to make new strains Regulars will be the best option for cross breeding strains.

Genetics – Many believe the genetics of a Female seed found in a pack of Regulars will be stronger and better than that of a Feminised pack of seeds.

Cons:

Control – There is no control over whether the seeds are Male or Female. You might end up getting a whole pack of Male seeds without finding any Females.

Yield – The only way to find out if your Regular seeds are Male or Female is to grow them. If its only Female plants wanted from the Regular pack you may have to ditch a lot of the crop to keep the Females safe.
