What do weed seeds look like?

Weed seeds or cannabis seeds are fairly unremarkable. Cannabis seeds all fairly small but can vary in size from around 5mm to a small as 0.5mm in length and up to 3mm in width. The colour of cannabis seeds is a whitish-brown with light brown-black speckling or patterning. The shape of cannabis seeds is unique, it has a robust middle with a slight point to either end. All mature cannabis seeds look similar, in fact it is impossible to tell the difference between hemp seeds and cannabis seeds just by looking at them.

What can you tell from a cannabis seed?

Although all mature cannabis seeds look the same, there are ways of telling the health and age of the seed. A ripe seed has a hard smooth skin with no cracks. Gentle applying pressure to the seed between your fingers will help you tell if it is viable. Cracking means the seed is premature or old.

Does the size matter?

Despite what some say, the size of a cannabis seed does not matter. It does not impact the size of the plant nor the capabilities of it. A small seed could produce a large plant and vice-versa.

Can you tell the strain from the look of the seed?

Before much research had been done in the field of cannabis seeds, some believed they could tell the strain of a cannabis seed. It is not possible to tell the strain of a cannabis seed. In fact, the seeds carry no discernible features that indicate whether the seed is hemp or cannabis.

Can you tell if a seed is feminised or regular from the look of the seed?

Many people ask: Is it possible to tell whether a cannabis seed is feminised or regular from the way it looks? As with the strain type, it is impossible to tell whether a seed is regular or feminised. This is why it is important to ensure you know your seeds come from a reputable source.

Finding seeds in your weed

It is common to find seeds in amongst the bud of a cannabis plant. In fact, a single cannabis plant can produce hundreds of seeds.

The seeds themselves contain no THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) but they do have healthy fatty acids and can be incorporated into your diet with no psychoactive side effects.

The small size and plain colouring of weed seeds are a stark contrast to the powerhouse of the cannabis plant.

When does a weed plant produce seeds?

When a female cannabis plant is pollinated (by a male plant) it will produce seeds within a few weeks.

As the flowers fully mature the cannabis seeds will begin to loosen from the flower.

By the time a cannabis plant produces seeds, the potency of the bud will have reduced.
