Medical Cannabis against COVID-19

Throughout the pandemic, researchers have been keen to learn whether cannabis can cure Covid-19. Whether high THC or high CBD, medical cannabis has been praised for its ability to treat a wide array of conditions.

This led to researchers questioning whether medical cannabis could aid the treatment of Covid-19 and what they have found is extremely interesting.

Except for the pain-relieving feature, Cannabis is also famous for its anti-inflammation effect. Israeli scientists based at the University of Haifa decided to research this effect and try to find the application of the anti-inflammatory feature of Weed for the supportive treatment of complicated cases of COVID-19.

Severe lung inflammation is the most dangerous symptom and cause of death for patients infected with Coronavirus. The ongoing research considers the recent findings in the micro dosage of THC, combined with the known anti-inflammatory effect of another cannabinoid – CBD (Cannabidiol).

When a body gets a signal from an infected area, it automatically releases a vast amount of white blood cells towards the heart of the infection. This excess of white blood cells often leads to the development of cytokines – molecules that attract and accumulate white blood cells. This process leads to inflammation. And although inflammation is a natural and healthy reaction of a body to the danger of infection, this process often gets out of control, causing the so-called cytokine storm.

The idea of the recent research is to use the ability of Weed to activate the natural cannabinoid system of the human body. This process helps to indicate and suppress the excessive reaction of our bodies to internal and external threats. Those reactions are exactly pains and inflammations. However, due to health complications, aging, and some other factors, this natural system often fails or may become inefficient, when the impact is too harsh.

Reducing the risk of serious disease

Using cannabinoids for Medical Cannabis may help to stimulate and maintain this natural process without the threat of traditional anti-inflammatory medicine side effects. Dr. Louria-Hayon, one of the leading researchers of the anti-inflammatory effect of Medical Cannabis said that this approach appeared most effective once used on volunteers infected by COVID-19, who receive treatment before their condition deteriorates. The vast majority of volunteers who received the test treatment didn`t even enter the harsh condition stage, although had all the health predispositions towards the worst-case scenario

More research is needed

Although these findings are interesting, more research is needed to conclusively say whether medical cannabis can cure Covid-19. Although this has become less urgent with the global vaccine rollout, Covid-19 is here to stay. Over the next few years, it is likely that coronavirus will mutate and yearly booster jabs will be needed to further protect the population. If it turns out that medical cannabis can also assist with reducing the risk of serious illness, that would be another great line of defense against this disease.

Were you using cannabis throughout the pandemic? Let us know if you caught coronavirus and how serious it was, it would be great to hear everyone’s individual stories!
