Photoperiod vs Autoflowering (non photoperiod), let’s explore the differences!
What does photoperiod mean?
Within their natural environment, most cannabis plants (whether Indica or Sativa) are photoperiod plants.
A photoperiod plant is a plant that is able to determine the length of daytime and night-time. These plants are also able to understand how the amount of daytime (sunlight) and night-time (darkness) change as the seasons do. This allows them to begin their flowering phase at the right time.
Indoor cannabis growers that use photoperiod seeds have to mimic the pattern of daytime and night-time. They use lighting systems to provide the same amount of lightness and darkness that a plant would receive in its natural environment. Causing their plants to flower at the appropriate time.
This all changed in the late 1990s with the introduction of non-photoperiod cannabis, otherwise known as Autoflowering cannabis.
Photoperiod cannabis plants tend to offer much larger yields than autoflowering plants yet they are also much harder to grow.
What is autoflowering?
Unlike photoperiod plants, which flower based on the amount of light and darkness they receive, Autoflowers will flower once they reach maturity (a certain size).
Autoflowers will reach the flowering stage regardless of the amount of light and darkness they have received.
They switch from the vegetation stage to the flowering stage automatically and can grow extremely quickly compared to their photoperiod counterparts.
Autoflowering plants are easier to grow than photoperiod and are typically complete within 8-12 weeks.
When choosing photoperiod vs autoflowering it would be wrong to assume that one is better than the other. Both can be great for different reasons!
