How to tell which cannabis seeds are female

Before we tackle this, it is important to note that the only definitive way to determine the sex of a seed is to germinate it.

Unfortunately, germination is illegal in most countries (including the UK). You can’t just plant it in your garden or indoors to find out.

This is where we have to trust the information provided by breeders and seed banks. This is why we have made this easier on our shop page by splitting all seeds into 3 categories; Automatic, Feminised & Regular.

The different types of seeds you can get

Feminised – Photoperiod seeds (guaranteed to always be female)
Automatic – Non-photoperiod seeds (most commonly female)
Regular – Photoperiod seeds (either male or female)

Aren’t some automatic seeds also regular?

Some Automatic seeds are also Regular; however, since there are not a lot of these, we found categorising the seeds into Auto, Fem and Reg are the simplest groupings for our customers.

Why we know which cannabis seeds are female

Thanks to the established process of creating female seeds, the majority of breeders sell feminised seeds. As we are only working with trusted breeders we are confident in the classifications provided by them.

Feminised or Automatic seeds are the perfect choice for any growers (where it is legal!). Most of the hard work has been done before you buy & all you need to do is take care of your plant and see how it goes!

It is possible for those collectors who are looking to preserve the genetics of a certain cannabis strain to buy automatic, regular or feminised; but as any regular collector will tell you, regular seeds will most likely have the best long term genetics. However, unless you know what you are doing, they can be a lot more challenging to grow!

We are confident that any seed which we have categorised as feminised will be feminised.
