The Blurred History Of Sour Diesel
Sour Diesel is one of the most recognisable strains in the cannabis world. Much like some of the other true classics its history is somewhat blurred. Back in the 90s we didn’t have the access to information and worldwide reach we have today with Cannabis so therefore we only have stories to go by with the creation of Sour Diesel.
With no specific genetic record of how it was created and which genetics were involved, Sour Diesel has still managed to be a name stay in both the commercial and black/grey market.
What know is that Sour Diesel was first bred somewhere in the west coast of America in the early 90s.
The most common theory of where Sour Diesel came from starts with Chemdawg 91. A very popular strain at the time in the USA with everyone wanting the get their hands on it.
What Happened Next With The Chemdawg
During the Chemdawg 91 hype a particular phenotype popped up and the breeders who had it were keeping it close. Only allowing sales of flower, with no seeds or clones leaving their hands. It is said that another breeder A.J. did everything he could to get his hands on as much of the flower as possible. This was in hope of finding, if possible, some seeds in the flower. Eventually A.J. got lucky and found a small number of seeds in some bud – now the mission was on.
A.J. didn’t just want to get his hands on the seeds to sell the flower for himself. But also to stabilise and preserve the genetics to be able to appreciate this special phenotype for years to come.
This is where the Sour Diesel cannabis seed genetics can get a bit tricky. As the seeds A.J. got were from the flower of the Chemdawg 91, there was always a possibility those seeds might not be a pure version of the Chemdawg 91.
The Next Step From A.J.
A.J. was a very successful breeder by this point but some of the plants he had from the seeds turned hermaphrodite. This further backs the idea that they weren’t pure Chemdawg 91 seeds.
To try and save the genetics A.J. crossed it with the ever-stable Super Skunk. While we don’t know the exact genetics of the seeds A.J. had…The story goes that this is the Sour Diesel cannabis seeds we know today.
Sour Diesel got its name from the truly gassy & citrus aroma it gives off in the tent as well as when you smoke. The taste that comes from Sour Diesel is just as citrus/gassy with many comparing it to the smell & taste of Kush. Combining that gassiness with the strong Citrus notes it was a real winner. Following the arrival of Sour Diesel we have been treated to many other classic Diesel strains such as NYC Diesel, Chiesel & Strawberry Sour Diesel to name a few
Traits & Terpenes In Today’s Versions
Although it is a hybrid Sour Diesel cannabis seeds will usually come in at 90% Sativa & 10% Indica. It is extremely popular for this reason. One of the real classic Sativa hybrids to come out of the 90s. Noted as being good for getting things done or bringing a good energy when consuming.
Expect fruity and gassy flavours – this is something that has really stuck over the years in all versions of Sour Diesel. Sour Diesel also tends to be a good producer when in the right conditions.
Unless you find a specific Sour Diesel cross it is unlikely you will get a phenotype with high CBD levels. It is a strong heaving hitting THC dominant strain.
Terpenes
As with all strains when grown from seeds or clones things can vary from plant to plant. Tests run on some have found the main terpenes usually found in Sour Diesel are Caryophyllene 0.13%, Humulene 0.81% and Pinene 0.3%. With the secondary terpenes being Limonene, Linalool, Myrcene and Terpinolene all coming in at less than 0.01%.
